Bronze House

Downsizing from a substantial family home into a unit on her own marked a significant new chapter for the owner of this Malvern East home. While the footprint may be smaller, she didn’t want to lose the sense of warmth, generosity and connection that had always been central to family life.

The brief was to transform the existing unit into a home that felt entirely her own – refined, comfortable and easy to live in – while still providing generous spaces for children, grandchildren, family and friends to come together.

At the heart of the transformation is the new open-plan kitchen, dining and living space. Removing the wall between the original kitchen and living areas completely changed the way the home functions, creating a light-filled central hub with a sense of openness and connection that belies the home’s modest footprint.

The kitchen was designed to feel generous rather than compact, with skylights bringing natural light deep into the space and Taj Mahal stone, soft neutral cabinetry and bronze accents adding warmth and quiet sophistication. Custom joinery throughout – including the dining buffet, fireplace and television unit – provides both character and carefully considered storage.

New herringbone timber floors establish warmth and continuity through the home, while a restrained palette of natural stone, soft neutrals and bronze creates a sense of calm and cohesion.

The bathrooms were equally important to the transformation. The powder room, master ensuite and main bathroom were completely redesigned, combining curved forms, stone vanities and layered tile selections with discreetly integrated accessible features. Rather than accessibility feeling like an addition or compromise, it became part of the design language of the home – allowing it to remain comfortable and functional well into the future.

Ultimately, the project is about much more than downsizing. It is about creating a home for a new stage of life without letting go of the things that mattered in the previous one: family, entertaining, warmth and connection. The result is a home that feels intimate when occupied by one, yet generous enough to expand when family and friends arrive.
